Superb antique gilt bronze sculpture portraying Andromeda being sacrificed to a sea monster that was terrorizing her village. She is chained to the rock as the sea monster rises from the deep to devour her. She's turned to her side looking down at the monster as it crawls up the rock to get her. She doesn't know at this time that any second Perseus will come to her rescue slaying the monster, winning the heart of Andromeda and eventually marrying her. The artist that sculptured this beautiful composition was a true master. He captured in gilt bronze the beautiful Andromeda nude but for her belt and jewelry chained to the rock as she sees the fierce sea creature. The expression he captured on her face is truly remarkable. She shows more concern than fear. This is a rare bronze with a gilt finish to Andromeda and a dark bronze and gilt highlights on the sea monster. The carved marble pink rock she stands on is the perfect base the artist carved to set this magnificent sculpture on. Height from the bottom of the base to the top of her hair 21 inches. From the bottom of her foot to the top of her head 15 inches. The sea monster is coming out from under the marble base. It measures 8 inches from the part of its body that's emerging from the rock to the top of its nose. Widest width at base 9 inches. Depth 9 inches. The sculpture is signed in the stone J. Boese. J. Boese was a very important German artist who worked in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This sculpture dates circa 1890. This bronze was discovered on one of my worldwide buying trips to Buenos Aires in 2001. It is a rare model. Weight 36 lbs. Excellent condition. Guaranteed to please as are all our items.
